University investigates alleged Indian under new law

The University of Washington is investigating an alleged Indian who may have violated a new state law by misrepresenting his academic credentials.

Terry Tafoya claims to be from Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. But he isn't enrolled there and didn't grow up there, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer discovered.

That hasn't stopped him from receiving taxpayer funds to speak at events across the country. He claims he has a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Washington but the school says that isn't true.

Tafoya also says he is Warm Springs. He was culturally adopted by a tribal family who doesn't mind that he claims to be related to them.
