The Confederated Grand Ronde Tribes of Oregon have a new chairman.
The tribal council voted 5-4 to name Chris Mercier as chairman. He defeated longtime chairwoman Cheryle Kennedy for the post.
Kennedy still sits on the council, having won re-election last month. She is serving another three-year term.
Mercier, the former secretary, has one year left in his term. He said he sought the chairman's post because he was concerned with the direction of the tribe.
