Federal recognition was a big topic at a candidates' forum held by the Delaware Tribe of Oklahoma.

The tribe was removed from the list of federally recognized entities last year. The Cherokee Nation sued to prevent the Delawares from being treated as a separate tribe.

The Delawares and Cherokees are in talks on legislation to restore the Delawares to recognition. But some candidates say the proposal gives the Cherokee Nation too much power.

Among other provisions, the Delawares must gain consent from the much larger Cherokee Nation for land-into-trust and federal funding matters within a 14-county area in northeastern Oklahoma.

The proposal has not been introduced by any member of Congress.
