George Spears, a Red Lake Ojibwe father of seven, died on Sunday after suffering a heart attack during the Twin Cities Marathon.
Spears, 49, was an avid runner and had no history of heart problems. He collapsed at the 6-mile mark. His son, George Jr., also ran the race but didn't know what happened until it was over.
Spears was a social worker for Hennepin County who worked with Indian children. In addition to his seven kids, he was a foster parent to many in the county.
