More than 100 family and friends gathered on the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska to bury Nathaniel Saunsoci-Mitchell, a 20-month-old who died in foster care off the reservation.
Nathaniel was buried in the tribal cemetery, on top of his paternal grandfather's grave. "Because he wasn't raised with his father's family, in this sense, we are giving him back," Adrian Saunsoci told The Sioux City Journal.
Nathaniel died last Sunday under mysterious circumstances. He was suffering from head injuries,
some broken bones and had been bitten by a dog, while living in with a foster care family in South Sioux City.
Authorities are investigating the incident but have not laid charges against anyone.
A memorial fund has been set up for the Saunsoci-Mitchell family. Donations can be made in person or by mail to Central Bank in Sioux City, 522 Fourth St., P.O. Box 776, 51101. The bank can be reached at 712-293-2265
