Mel Gibson screened his new movie "Apocalypto" for two Indian audiences in Oklahoma last Friday.
The lead role is played by Rudy Youngblood, who is Comanche from Oklahoma. He stars as Jaguar Paw, a Mayan man who watches his village overtaken by another Mayan group.
According to The New York Times, the film depicts "constant warfare, slave culture and chilling scenes of human sacrifice." The dialogue is entirely in Yucatec, a Mayan dialect. [IMDB Entry].
Gibson screened the film at one of the Chickasaw Nation's casinos and at Cameron University in Lawton. He also attempted to show the movie at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, but school officials said the request came too late.
