The United Keetoowah Band of Oklahoma opened an office in Arkansas to provide services to member who live in the Fort Smith area.

Chief George Wickliffe said the office will probably be the busiest outside of the main headquarters in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. More than 2,200 members live in the Fort Smith area.

The tribe previously established an office in Waldron, Arkansas, but it was short lived. With plans to develop land in Fort Smith, tribal leaders hope to stay around longer.

The tribe is trying to establish a land base in Oklahoma but is running into opposition from the Cherokee Nation, whose leaders claim they have authority over any land-into-trust applications within their area.
