Cheryl Tooshkenig Mitchell became the first Native woman to compete in a Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament this week.

Mitchell, 27, a Potawatomi from the Walpole Island Reserve in Ontario, Canada, teed off at the Canadian Women's Open on Thursday. Although she didn't do as well as hoped, she hoped to improve her game as the tour continues today.

In addition to being the first Native woman in the LPGA, Mitchell is believed to be the second Native woman professional golfer in Canada.
