Franklin Madros, Tanana Chiefs leader, dies at 86


Franklin Madros Sr., the second traditional chief of the Tanana Chiefs Conference, died on Saturday. He was 86.

Madros was born on March 28, 1920. He was raised in Kaltag, an Athabaskan village on the Yukon River, and became a leader among the villages and tribes in Interior Alaska.

A veteran of World War II, Madros worked on land claims, culture and subsistence issues. He was considered one of the keepers of traditional culture.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday in Kaltag.
