Mescalero Apache Nation worried about hatchery

The Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico is holding an auction August 1 to raise money for its financially-strapped hatchery.

The tribe took over the hatchery from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. But funding has been a long-standing issue.

Despite donations from other tribes, the hatchery is operating at 25 percent of its normal budget, the manager said. The fishery could close in the coming year without enough funds, Michael Montoya said.
