Suspicious fire destroys sacred Karuk dance house

Members of the Karuk Tribe believe someone intentionally burned down a sacred dance house.

The fire totally destroyed the Kaatimiin, used for a children's healing ceremony. This was the second time in less than 10 years that the house has been burned.

"It's a hate crime," Karuk spiritual leader Julian Lang told The Eureka Reporter.

Authorities are still investigating but tribal members say they have an idea who may be behind the fire. The tribe hopes to put together a reward for information leading to an arrest.
