First Nations leaders in Manitoba have called off a blockade of rail lines but will continue to press for settlement of outstanding land claims.

The tribes reached a deal with the Canadian National Railway, heading off a court hearing over the blockade. CN wanted an injunction to keep their lines clear.

As part of the deal, CN will urge the Canadian government to settle land claims. According to one tribal leader, more than 6,000 claims are still pending.

To continue to draw attention to the issue, Native communities in Manitoba will hold rallied today, the day of the planned blockade.
