The Miss Navajo Nation program could cease to exist due to budget cuts that threaten the long-running pageant.
In 2003, the office received $13,000 for travel. The funds have since been cut to $5,000, forcing reigning Miss Navajo Rachelle James to cut down on public appearances.
The winner of the pageant is supposed to receive scholarship money but the two prior Miss Navajos have not gotten any money. James isn't likely to see any money either.
To make up for the budget cuts, the office plans to start charging for appearances. James is sure the movie will anger Navajo people. The office also plans to turn to other sources for money.
James receives a salary of $12.21 an hour, or $25,396 a year. She is not paid overtime because she is considered an executive branch political appointee.
