Addie George, oldest Yuchi woman, dies at 94

Addie George, the oldest member of the Yuchi Tribe of Oklahoma, died Friday at her home in Sapulpah, Oklahoma. She was 94.

Born in Oklahoma in 1911, George was forced to learn English when she was shipped to boarding school. But she kept her Yuchi language and picked up other Indian languages as well.

Recalled as a short and outgoing woman, George was the mother of nine children. She devoted her life to preserving Yuchi culture and language, teaching a public schools and working with the Oklahoma Euchee Language Project.

The Yuchi tribe was based in the Southeast before being removed to Oklahoma. Many members are considered part of the Creek Nation, although the Yuchis maintain a separate identity and culture.
