The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians are meeting for the first time in a joint council.
The meeting is taking place on the Eastern Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina. UKB leaders came from Oklahoma for the historic event at Keetoowah, the original Cherokee village.
The day started with an 8-mile torch run. The torch symbolized the fire that the Cherokees took to Oklahoma after being forced to leave their homeland by the federal government.
