The Seminole Tribe of Florida has acquired a 232-year-old letter to The Cowkeeper, who is considered the founder of the tribe.
The letter was written on February 9, 1774 by a British official. It asks The Cowkeeper for peace between the British and the Seminoles, who were considered part of the Muscogree (Creek) Nation at the time.
The Seminoles soon developed their own nation. "The Cowkeeper is considered the George Washington of the Seminole Tribe of Florida,'' Tina Osceola, the executive director of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, told The Miami Herald.
The tribe bought the letter for $3,000. It will be on display at the museum in the fall.
