Basketball in Southern Ute teen's heritage

Tyla Frost, a member of the Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado, has basketball in her genes.

Frost's mother, brother, uncles and cousins all excelled at basketball. She's been playing ever since she was a little girl, training that earned her a spot on her team at Bayfield High School.

But sports isn't the only thing Frost is good at. She's the reigning Miss Southern Ute who's equally comfortable on the powwow grounds as she is on the court.

Frost is looking forward to the 2006 North American Indigenous Games, being held in Denver next month. But she won't be able to play due to an injury to her ankle. She's going to be the manager of the tribe's team.

When she returns to school in the fall, Frost will be a senior.
