More money sought for Exxon Valdez oil spill

The Department of Justice and the state of Alaska said on Thursday they will ask Exxon Mobil for an additional $92 million to cover the costs of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Exxon previously agreed to pay $900 million for damage caused to the environment. A clause authorized the state and federal government to ask for more money to address unforeseen damages.

Alaska Native villages affected by the spill are pressing for more money. They say their fishing, hunting and subsistence way of life has been destroyed.
