An unrecognized Cherokee group in Georgia has started to issue voter identification cards and says it will sign anyone up for associate membership regardless of Indian ancestry.
The Cherokee Indians of Georgia teamed up with former state lawmaker Walter Ray, a Democrat who is running for secretary of state, to produce the photo IDs. They hope to issue as many cards in order for people to vote in upcoming elections.
State law authorizes the use of tribal IDs but some state officials are questioning the legality of the Cherokee cards. The state has no federally recognized tribes.
