A lawsuit filed by members of the Winnemucca Indian Colony has led to the delay of the "Divine Strake," the Pentagon's plan to blow up more than 700 tons of explosives at the Nevada Test Site.
But a key member of Congress remains skeptical. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said the Defense Threat Reduction Agency has failed to show that the blast will be safe and will not stir up radioactive fallout left from prior nuclear weapons tests. He has said he will block the test if safety concerns aren't met.
The Nevada Test Site is located on Western Shoshone land that tribal members say was not ceded to the federal government.
