Pojoaque Pueblo in northern New Mexico has seen its bison herd grow from three calves to 38 adults in 15 years, The Santa Fe New Mexican reports.

The herd resides on 950 acres, to be expanded to 1,400 acres. The tribe's s bison program checks on the animals every day.

During harvest time, bison meat is used for community feasts and meals. Each family gets ten pounds of meat a year.

Pojoaque Pueblo is one of 42 member tribes of the Intertribal Bison Cooperative. A total of 10 New Mexico tribes belong to the organization.
