Robert Rosebear, a member of Red Lake Band of Ojibwe whose pipestone work is known worldwide, died on Tuesday due to complications of diabetes. He was 58.

Rosebear was a self-taught artist. He mined sacred pipestone from the Pipestone National Monument in southwestern Minnesota. One of his peace pipes was given to South African leader Nelson Mandela.

Memorial services are being held today from 5pm to 9pm at the Cremation Society of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
