Meskwaki Tribe swears in chief for new police force

The Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa swore in its first police chief to head up a new police department.

Retired Des Moines Police Lt. Roger Sanders, 56, was hired to oversee five officers being hired with the help of a $390,000 Department of Justice grant. He was among 39 applicants for the job.

This is the first time since the 1930s that the tribe has had its own police presence on the reservation. The county police have been providing services to the Tama settlement.
