The school district in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has adopted a five-year plan to keep Indian students in school.
The drop out rate among Indian students is extremely high. Of 112 Indian freshman who started high school in 2002, only 13 graduated, according to one study. Test scores also show an achievement gap among Indian students in all grades.
In hopes of changing the situation, the district will provide middle and high school students with mentors who will help and monitor performance.
