Alaska Native leader to leave Tanana Chiefs post

Buddy Brown is resigning as president and chief executive officer of the Tanana Chiefs Conference due to health and family concerns.

Brown, 36, has been battling cancer since October 2004. He underwent surgery to remove tumors on his liver and was expected to make a full recovery. But doctors found that the cancer spread to his bones so he recently started chemotherapy treatment.

A new election will be held after Brown steps down in mid-March. Whoever is elected will serve the remaining two years of Brown's three-year term. This was Brown's second term.

TCC represents 42 tribes in interior Alaska.
