Representatives of seven Yup'ik villages spoke at an all-Yup'ik workshop at the Anchorage Forum on the Environment on Wednesday.
The villagers said one of their biggest problem they face is mounting piles of garbage. Lacking resources, the vilages have become home to toxic dumps and landfills that can lead to health and environmental problems.
After noticing that traditional fishing camps, rivers and trails were being polluted, the seven villages formed the Nelson Island Consortium to clean up their lands. They are starting to recycle materials and properly dispose of harmful chemicals.
