Cuts to Indian programs feared as Bush rolls out budget

The Bush administration is rolling out its fiscal year 2007 budget today and it's expected that the numbers won't be so great for Indian Country.

"It's definitely going to be a difficult year politically for tribes to compete with other domestic priorities," Amber Ebarb of the National Congress of American Indians told Gannett News Service.

NCAI released its FY07 Budget Request last week. It calls on the federal government to "invest" in Indian Country by providing adequate funds for housing, health care, public safety and other key programs.

The budget will officially be released at 10am this morning. It can be found at the White House Office of Management and Budget [Web Site] or at the Government Printing Office [ Web Site].

The Interior Department budget is usually posted at http://www.doi.gov/budget by 1pm.
