Nez Perce Tribe opposes state plan to kill wolves

The Nez Perce Tribe is opposing Idaho's plan to kill dozens of wolves, saying state officials are relying on "junk science" to justify the slaughter.

The tribe helped reintroduce the wolves to northern Idaho. But now the state wants to get rid of as many as 45 wolves, saying they are hurting elk herds. Tribal officials say the state's evidence is not conclusive.

In related Nez Perce news, young tribal members will be going to Montana this week to participate in a bison hunt. The state of Montana recognized the tribe's off-reservation hunting rights under an 1855 treaty.
