Big Lagoon Rancheria land-into-trust criticized

The California Coastal Commission says approval of the Big Lagoon Rancheria's land-into-trust application will not be consistent with state law.

The tribe wants five acres placed in trust. Three single-famly homes will be constructed on the parcel.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is moving to approve the application but the commissions says home development is not consistent with the state Coastal Act. The panel wants the tribe to change its development ordinances and waive its sovereign immunity, two conditions Chairman Virgil Moorehead says the BIA won't accept.
