White collar crime on the rise on Navajo Nation

White collar crime among employees of the Navajo Nation is rising, a top criminal investigator said.

Mike Brown has spent 23 years investigating crimes. He said tribal workers are finding ways to abuse the system in more complex ways.

"These cases have really, really gotten out of hand," Brown told The Gallup Independent. "It's grown in both sophistication and money amounts over the years."

Brown said men in positions of power commit most white collar crimes. Women commit a smaller percentage, with most being single mothers acting out of need or desperation, he said.
