The FBI is investigating the death of a former leader of the Confederated Colville Tribes of Washington as a homicide.

Clarence "Jude" Stensgar, 77, was shot dead in his home on Monday. Officers had been called there for a "possible domestic dispute," the tribal police chief said. His live-in partner has refused to talk to police and has hired an attorney.

Stensgar served on the tribal council for more than a decade. He was chairman in 1989.
