Members of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma protested against a bill that would lease the mineral rights beneath Fort Reno.
Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) is sponsoring S.1832, the Fort Reno Mineral Leasing Act. It would allow development of land that was promised to the tribes back in 1883.
Fort Reno is now being used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a research lab. Some within the USDA claim the tribes sold the land and were paid for it twice.
