White Earth camp passes on wild rice traditions

A couple on the White Earth Ojibwe Reservation in Minnesota started a camp to pass on tribal rice harvesting traditions.

The weeklong camp teaches kids how to provide for themselves. "A long time ago, we did this as a way to survive, survive through the winter. Now, we are doing it to strengthen our culture, bring it back," Kathy Hoagland told the Associated Press.

Hoagland and her husband, Earl, started the camp six years ago. They take youth out on boats to gather the rice, then it is brought back to camp for further handling.
