The White Earth Band of Ojibwe marked the return of the sturgeon fish to White Earth Lake in Minnesota.

The tribe has been working for the past six years to reintroduce the fish. "The sturgeon is not just an economic and biological resource, it's also a cultural and spiritual relative of the Ojibwe," said Winona LaDuke, the head of the White Earth Land Recovery Project, The Fargo Forum reported.

The effort culminated with the return of 13,000 fish to White Earth Lake and Round Lake. Tribal officials say it will take another 10 to 15 years for the sturgeon to mature and reproduce.
