Members of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana will vote on two natural resource development questions on November 7.
One question asks whether the tribe should develop its coal reserves. The other asks about coalbed methane development.
The issue is generating debate on the reservation. Winona LaDuke, the Ojibwe environmentalist, spoke there last week to encourage tribes to look at renewable sources of energy.
Another group, called the Association for the Advancement of Indigenous Resources, is presenting the industry side of the issue. Representatives from the Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado, a leader in energy development, will speak to the group next week.
Northern Cheyenne President Eugene Little Coyote recently disapproved a proposal for coalbed methane development. He said voters should decide whether the tribe moves forward.
