The Seattle Post-Intelligencer endorsed Claudia Kauffman, a member of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho, for Washington State Senate.
The paper says Kauffman is a better fit for the 47th District than Republican Mike Riley.
Her votes would "be more in concert with the views of the district's changing demographics and political values."
The Seattle Times endorsed Kauffman prior to the Democratic primary, which she won. She currently serves as the intergovernmental affairs liaison for the Muckleshoot Tribe in Washington.
Kauffman is a sister-in-law to John Gonzales, a former president of the National Congress of American Indians. "She's a D, I'm an R, but I'm campaigning for her," Gonzales said at the NCAI annual conference earlier this month.
