Death of Omaha toddler still under investigation

The death of a 20-month-old member of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska is still under investigation, although final reports might be ready this week.

Nathaniel Saunsoci-Mitchell died on September 22 in a foster home off the reservation. He was placed by the tribe in a home with an Oglala Sioux foster mother, The Sioux City Journal reported.

After Saunsoci-Mitchell died, the Oglala Sioux Tribe tried to obtain custody of the mother's five biological children. The request was not granted and the children are now temporary wards in Nebraska.

The foster mother and her husband have since moved to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Ed Matney, a county attorney overseeing the case, would not say whether the foster family has been implicated in Saunsoci-Mitchell's death.
