Clybert Peyketewa, a member of the Zuni Tribe of New Mexico, was sentenced to a year in prison for the hit-and-run death of Richard B. Bejarano, a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona.
The accident occurred in Tucson, Arizona, in January. Peyketewa, 28, who had been cited for speeding prior to the crash, hit Bejarano, 43, in a crosswalk.
Peyketewa fled the scene but was found 18 days later following an anonymous tip. Charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, he pleaded guilty to negligent homicide.
Bejarano's family member said the one-year sentence against Peyketewa was too lenient. Peyketewa has no prior criminal record or substance-abuse issues.
