OIG report details 'excessive' Internet use at DOI

A new report from the Interior Department's Office of Inspector General details "excessive" personal use of the Internet by employees.

The investigation found that employees spend a large amount of time accessing gambling and pornographic websites even though department policy specifically forbids such activity. The report also said employees were visiting shopping, auction and gaming sites, which aren't specifically prohibited, but typically "interfere" with productivity.

The OIG was able to access prohibited sites because some agencies, like the National Park Service, don't utilize software or technology to block such sites. Some agencies do employ filters.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs wasn't included in the review because most employees do not have access to the public Internet. The Office of Special Trustee is not mentioned in the report.
