The Fort Peck Tribes of Montana released 10 swift foxes on the reservation in an effort to restore an animal that was declared extinct in the state.

The swift fox plays an important role in tribal culture. The animal saved tribal members during the ice age.

The state declared the swift fox extinct in 1969 but the tribe recently found a den with a mother and four pups. Subsequently, someone shot and killed the mother, who had been named Wenona, or first-born daughter.

The tribe will introduce 10 foxes every year for the next few years.
