"A former Indian Country Today reporter has made public claims about the operation of this newspaper that misstate how our editorial process is conducted. As the recrimination is now blasted throughout the world wide web, we are obliged to say this much:
It is important that folks think about what is real about Indian Country Today, what the newspaper has stood for, the battles it has fought, the battles that it still needs to fight. Our core editors' home office group, which ultimately shares all editorial decisions and produces articles for publication, includes four Indian editors, including the positions of senior editor, opinion editor, assistant editor and design specialist; two dedicated non-native managing editors and copy editors complete the core team.
We are proud that this ICT editors' production team of seven includes five women, who run the weekly operation and direct the newspaper's coverage from front page to back page. We are proud that our consistently Indian-directed team also involves people from a variety of cultures and ethnicities. We abhor racism of any kind as much as we value the authentic experience and perspectives of people who value and grasp the deeper aspirations and nuances of Indian country."
