The Sioux Falls Argus Leader is running a series on race relations on the sports field.
Tribal members say they are treated differently and subject to discrimination when they play games off the reservation. In one highly publicized incident, the girls basketball team from the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation was taunted and chased by white teens with a shotgun.
"From the Native perspective, there's always going to be an underlying sense of discrimination," says Roger Campbell, a former basketball player who is now the state's director of tribal government relations.
Matt Rama, a coach for reservation teams, said his players endured racial taunts when they go off the reservation. But others said non-Natives who come to the reservation are sometimes treated poorly.
