Lawmakers want Interior to recover lost royalties

Two Republican lawmakers are asking Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to collect billions of dollars in lost oil and gas royalties.

Reps. Tom Davis (R-Virginia) and Darrell Issa (R-California) say it is "absurd" for Interior not to recover the royalties. They sent a letter to Kempthorne, demanding renegotiation of leases with oil and gas companies.

The American public has already lost out on $1.3 billion in royalties due to faulty leases. Up to $10 billion is at risk, according to experts.
