Residents of the Alaska Native village of Hooper Bay are still recovering from a fire that devastated the community.

The August 3 fire, blamed on kids, destroyed homes, the village elementary and high schools, a teacher housing complex and other buildings. The 14 families who lost homes also lost subsistence food they had collected.

Donations in the form of clothing, housewares, books, camping gear and even firearms have helped the residents. The village of about 1,100 is getting ready for the fall berry picking season.
