Mike Fleagle, a former chief of the McGrath Native Village in Alaska, has been named the head of the Federal Subsistence Board.
Fleagle, who is Inupiat, was appointed by Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne. He replaces Mitch Dementieff, a Native leader who headed the board for 11 years before being removed by Kempthorne.
Fleagle has been serving as chairman of the state Board of Game. He has spent most of his life in rural areas.
