Election dispute for Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe

An election dispute has stalled the installation of a new president for the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe of South Dakota.

Josh Weston defeated incumbent president Mark Allen in an August 1 election. But Allen's supporters challenged the results, saying that Weston did not meet the tribe's residency requirements.

The tribe's election board agreed to consider the issue and will hold a hearing August 29. At issue is whether Weston lived on the reservation for a year prior to the election.

Three other officials who were elected earlier this month were sworn in last Wednesday.
