Slaying brings publicity to shy Havasupai Tribe

The publicity-shy Havasupai Tribe of Arizona is under the media spotlight in Japan after a Japanese tourist was found murdered on the reservation.

Tomomi Hanamure's killing has generated intense interest in Japan. But tribal leaders aren't talking to the Japanese media and have escorted Japanese reporters from the reservation.

The incident puts the tribe in a tough spot. The tribe largely depends on tourism for its economy but remains suspicious of outsiders.

Hanamure went to the reservation alone and checked into the tribal lodge at the bottom of the tribe's portion of the Grand Canyon. Her body was found four days later .

A young Havasupai in his late teens is considered a person of interest and is in custody on unrelated charges.
