Arapaho elders certified to teach language

Elders from the Northern Arapaho Tribe of Wyoming will be teaching the Arapaho language to a new generation of students.

Seventeen elders received teaching certificates after an eight-week course at the Wind River Tribal College. They focused on teaching skills in order to be able to pass on the language to elementary and high school students.

According to the tribe, only about 240 people out of 8,000 tribal members speak Arapaho fluently. A tribal college professor said the language will disappear in 15 years without a major revitalization effort.
