Sen. Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico) and Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico) introduced a bill on Tuesday to transfer more land into trust for New Mexico's 19 Pueblos.

Much of the old Albuquerque Indian School is already in trust for the tribes. The Albuquerque Indian Schools Act of 2006 would add another 18.3 acres, in two parcels, to the list.

"I believe this property, once transferred, would receive greater utilization by being available for education and economic development for the 19 pueblos," Domenici said.

The tribes are using the old property for a number of projects, including a new building being leased to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The tribes hope to start work on a hotel and other retail development.
