The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has settled a lawsuit over ice breaking on the St. Lawrence River in New York.

The tribe sued the Seaway Development Authority, a federal agency, in March 2004. The tribe was worried that icebreaking operations could cause petroleum or chemical spills, harm fish, create shoreline flooding and erosion, and release PCB-contaminated sediments.

The authority has since agreed to consult the tribe more frequently and involve the tribe in decision-making. A three-year study of ice breaking will be conducted.
